Every mammal on the planet has relied on cannabinoid compounds and their endocannabinoid system which utilizes those compounds, to survive, for millions of years. And cannabinoids are not exclusive to the cannabis plant.
While many wild plants and grasses contain trace amounts which herbivores consuming large amounts of roughage access, cannabinoids can also be found in common foods.

Interestingly cannabis cultivation in history appears to have started and grown in parallel to our own change from a hunter gatherer subsistence to farming, and eating less raw food.
